One of the features of this year’s exciting annual festive art and craft market, Buzzart, which takes place at the KZNSA Gallery over the festive season, is a selection of unusual, bespoke hand-crafted lampshades.

Candy Randles from The Lamp Collection, who is celebrating a decade of business, created a design-a-lampshade competition through her website in association with artSPACE. Art makers and crafters have embraced the concept, designing funky, original one-off designer lampshades. Randles was delighted by the response and intends to run the competition annually.

David Mtongerwa walked away with the first prize for his innovative coloured-wire, bead and mixed media shade in bold ice-cream colours. His prize was R500 cash from The Lamp Collection.

All the entries – including Mtongerwa’s winning lampshade – will be on sale at the Buzzart Fair.

Mtongerwa started his craft work when he first came to South Africa in 2002 from Zimbabwe, when he was encouraged by his friends to do art work. He has a love and the passion for art, and now earns his living through his work. He is available for commissions. He can be contacted on 061 085 6577.

He does a range of craft work, supplying various outlets and galleries including the KZN Society of Art Gallery; Umhlanga Art Gallery; Earthnic Heritage Market and Hillcrest Aids Centre. He found out about the competition from KZNSA Gallery’s Gloria Hoff who encouraged him to enter. He could not conceal his excitement on coming first in the competition. “I will use this money to buy material to further my craft,” he said.

Buzzart runs in all of the KZNSA Gallery spaces offering a one-stop shop for all festive shopping – including stocking-fillers and greeting cards. The Gallery will be stocked with art, craft, decor items, garments, jewellery, Christmas tree decorations, recycled art, ceramics, mosaics and accessories.

Of particular mention is the KZN Association of Ceramic Artists who has contributed a range of items made by their members. There will also be a selection of paintings reinterpreting the works of iconic South African artist, Pierneef.

The idea is to spend time leisurely browsing for all Christmas presents – with gift ideas suitable for tots to grannies; work colleagues and loved ones. If one needs to pause for inspiration and sustenance, the KZNSA Gallery Cafe will be open!

Buzzart runs over the festive season and the KZNSA Gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday. The KZNSA can be found at 166 Bulwer Road, Glenwood, Durban. More information on 031 277 1705.
