After a
sold out season in July, The Great
American Songbook is back by popular demand for the many people who missed
out on this Pietermaritzburg production, and for those that wanted to see it
for a second and third time!
The Great American Songbook refers to songs from the golden
era of musicals, both Broadway and Hollywood, which have become classic
standards many years after they were written. Songs made famous by people such
as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole and The Platters, and taken up
in this century by the likes of Michael Buble, Robbie Williams, Rod Stewart,
Norah Jones and Queen Latifah. Each generation has its popular singers who
continually update and reinterpret these songs for a new audience. From jazz to
swing, ballads to anthems, riveting solos to choral harmonies, The Great American Songbook presents the
best that American music has to offer.
Peter
Mitchell and Helen Vermaak, directors of many musicals, have brought together
the top local talent to take a new look at some oldies but goldies. The amazing
voice of well-known songstress Erin Fourie joins the melodious sounds of Ryan
Calder, Sandra Styles, Tammy Calder, Brandon Bosch, Jon Branch and Vermaak
herself. Each singer has something special to offer, as, accompanied by the
inimitable Jeff Judge, they perform new versions of hits such as Fly Me to the Moon, Misty, I Got Rhythm,
That Old Black Magic, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Summertime, When I Fall in Love,
The Way You Look Tonight and Let's Do
It, amongst many other old favourites.
The Great American Songbook runs at the Hexagon Dive on the University of KwaZulu-Natal campus at 19h00
for 19h30 on November 29 and 30 and again from December 5 to 7. Tickets R75 (R70
