CSI (SEASON 5)

Running on Sony Entertainment Television, DStv Channel 127, as a double bill from December 31 to continue on Tuesdays at 20h00 will be Season 5 of CSI.

The most-watched drama series in the world, CSI returns for another season of Emmy®-winning forensic science and criminal intrigue. Welcome back to the streets of Las Vegas, where a sinister underbelly lurks behind the glitz and glamour.

This season, investigators Gil Grissom (William Petersen), Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger) and the team investigate a dead stripper in a hotel room, an “alien” in a shallow grave, suspicious activities at a local spa and a murder after a neighbourhood swingers’ party. Look out for two episodes directed by Quentin Tarantino, the celluloid master of bloodshed himself!

WEBJUNKIES LEAD ACTION CALL

Social entrepreneurs across Africa rally to the call to unite in support of pan African networking by joining the Africans for Africa Network.

The aim is to change the media narrative from one driven by western European influence to one that reflects an authentic African voice.

The Africans for Africa Network is a bold initiative and one that is long overdue. Heading the list of visionary Africans joining the Africans for Africa Network is Webjunkies.

Kevin Naidoo and Rajen Govender, the joint shareholders of 4sa Technologies (Pty) Ltd, trading under a bouquet of brands (signs4sa.co.za, cars4sa.co.za, trucks4sa.co.za, bikes4sa.co.za and more), believe wholeheartedly in this initiative, “As entrepreneurs, we face numerous challenges daily, but we remain committed to shaping the social landscape where we can. Joining this initiative was a way of us ‘paying it forward’,“ they said.

Webjunkies, also a division of 4sa Technologies that caters for website development and online “real estate” management, was deployed to create an online presence for the Africans for Africa Network. The company is passionately and competently driven by Naidoo and Govender, both confident businessmen infused with drive and ambition. Kevin is primarily responsible for growth initiatives while Rajen, a Chartered Accountant (SA), takes care of all governance and strategic matters.

Govender explained that the 4sa Technologies Group was formed to enable the on-line presence of motor related businesses seeking to extend their reach to a continuously growing, ever demanding and tech - savvy community. “We are a fully empowered company, principally generating on-line leads with added website development capability. We have recently extended our offering to include design, manufacture and installation of all types of signage,“ he said.

They both hail from Chatsworth, Durban and met up in Johannesburg in 2010 at a mentorship programme. An immediate friendship was forged between these two determined, like-minded men. After the programme they realised that they were eminently suited to working together and set about outlining an efficient business plan.

In 2011 they acquired an already established family concern and Signs4sa.co.za, came into being, offering a bouquet of signage services. This entity is currently the largest in the group. They are supported and assisted by their experienced and capable staff.

From modest backgrounds – life was not easy – they both say that it was effort, determination and dedication that got them to where they are today. Their vision is to create self-sustaining businesses that contribute meaningfully to the greater South Africa and looking into the future, the world is their oyster: “we stand toe to toe with anyone in the business”.

As for the Africans for Africa initiative: “We hope to see it achieve its objectives of ground-breaking, lasting change and creating the platform dialogue it wishes. It’s about time that Africans take control of their destiny”, they said.

The aims of the Africans for Africa Network, the brainchild of Vanessa Perumal, founder of JT Communications Solutions and the JT Comms African Media Resource Centre of Excellence, are to engage in a series of dialogues, set up exchanges between artists on the continent, create new markets for Africa’s cultural content and products and take ownership of the space in which Africa’s voice is expressed through music and culture in international arenas.

“We were delighted to have recently launched the website at the biggest world music festival (Womex 2013) in Cardiff, Wales. We are very grateful to have had Webjunkies, a key trade-exchange partner, design our website. We thank them for their generous support,” said Perumal.

Besides the key stakeholder and trade exchange, Webjunkies, Perumal also set up partnerships with South Africa’s Emthonjeni Arts and Mali’s renowned FestivalauDesert and various other African networks including IMEXSA, iStart2, SA Women Engineers, Howiviewafrica, Woldegiorgis Ghebrehiwot from Mekelle University, Tigray, Ethiopia, Johnny Muteba from Democratic Republic of Congo, Sam Mokorosi’s Africa The Good News, Gcinamasiko Arts & Heritage Trust - Nozincwadi (Dr Gcina Mhlope) and Harem Clothing.

The first of the Africans for Africa Network’s pan African exchanges will be hosted by the Emthonjeni Arts with a two-week long residency with artists from the Malian Festival au Desert, in December 2013. This first-ever partnership between the two countries emerged out of Africans For Africa Network’s mission to change the prevailing narrative of Africa from one driven by Western media, to one that reflects the inherent strengths of the continent across various Afro-centric platforms.

The website will be managed by Di Sparks who comes from a Public Relations background. She enjoys working with people and particularly enjoys sharing knowledge and hopes to stimulate an excitement about the Africans for Africa network. She hopes to stimulate and push others in common networks to tell their own African stories that can re-shape and build closer partnerships. ARTS EDUCATION 100 SCHOOLS CAMPAIGN

The Department of Arts and Culture, together with the Department of Basic Education, partner with John Kani and Nobulali Productions for a project that is a first of its kind in South Africa. They aim to reach 100 schools in 100 days through 100 pledges in support of the Arts Education 100 Schools campaign!

The belief that education is a human right has led to the fundraising drive which started on International Human Rights Day (December 10) to end 100 days later on National Human Rights Day (March 21,  2014). World –renowned playwright Dr John Kani whose play Nothing But the Truth is a prescribed as a setwork in schools will give a keynote address at the event.

In 2013, Nobulali Productions ran a successful tour of Nothing But The Truth in theatres around Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, reaching more than 9,000 learners and 300 teachers. With the successful support from varied role players, the company hopes to increase its reach by threefold in 2014.

Nobulali Productions was established out of a need to make Shakespeare and other setworks prescribed by the Department of Education as well as Independent Examinations Board easy to understand. Arts Education 100 Schools Campaign is the company’s invaluable investment toward creative arts and a response to the National Development 2030 ideals.

The idea of arts education started in 2008 when the company’s founder Lali Dangazele (known for her role as Nkensani in Rhythm City) found that drama can be used as an experiential way to make the curriculum fun and fast to learn. Since then her ‘assignment’ has evolved into a teaching and learning method called ShakeXperience™.

Response from government, corporate, theatres and individuals has been phenomenal, said a delighted Dangazele, adding that the response brings to the centre stage the importance of making a difference to the 30 million learners, through one of the fundamental arenas of human rights: Education. She said the concept of “100 days” is associated with “effectiveness”, “fresh” and “new approach to experiential learning”.

QUILT SHOWS

The KZN Quilters Guild hosts four large quilt shows on an annual basis.

These shows showcase quilts designed and quilted by various quilters throughout KZN. The events aim to raise awareness of the craft. The guild also invites various speakers from within the community to give talks on various topics. The last meeting’s speaker was from the Alzheimer's Association, who explained how and what a sensory quilt would consist of, in order to keep their patients’ five senses active.

“This is how we give back to the community,” says a Guild spokesperson. “There are shops/merchants selling their goods, as well as demos throughout the morning. We have many visitors and all proceeds towards fundraising for the 2015 National and International Quilt show.”

Shows in 2014 take place on March 8; May 31, September 6 and November 1.

The shows take place from 09h00 to 14h00 at the Durban Girls High School, Glenwood (in Penzance Road). Visitors fee R35. For more information contact Pauline Law on 082 806 9149 or email on paulineannelaw@gmail.com

On May 10, the Grassroots Quilters Guild, Village Quilters and Kloof Country Quilters will host a quilt show at the Kloof Civic Hall from 09h00 to 14h00. More information from Lyn Gonzaga on 031 764 5045 or email lyngon@telkomsa.net

QUILT WORKSHOPS

The KwaZulu-Natal Quilters Guild is a non-profit organization that will host the 18th National and International Quilting Festival in 2015 and therefore has to raise the funds to do so.

The Quilt Academy Workshops, held every second month at a nominal cost of R100, form part of the fundraising, as well as covering hall rental fees. The workshops are for all levels of sewers who now have the opportunity to learn many techniques taught by teachers with many years of sewing and quilting experience. These teachers offer their services for free otherwise the workshops would not be possible.

The Guild also teaches women and men from rural areas how to sew and use a machine in order to create work opportunities for themselves and thereby generate an income.

Quilt Academy Workshop dates for 2014 are:
January 18
March 29
May 24
July 26
October 4
November 22

The workshops take place from 09h00 to 15h00 at the Glenwood Presbyterian Church (entrance in Evans Road), Glenwood. Cost R100 per person. For more details as well as to book for the class and meals, go to http://bookwhen.com/kznqg-qa
