AUDITIONS FOR GREAT HEART



Showtime Management is proud to announce first auditions for Great Heart, a new musical inspired by the life and music of Johnny Clegg.

The production is scheduled to commence rehearsals in late 2014. As a first round of the casting process, the organisation will be looking for suitable candidates for the two principal male roles. (See brief below) Casting for the balance of the characters for Great Heart will take place at a later stage.

Candidates should prepare one Pop/Rock song best suited to showing off their Vocal Range. (Please bring sheet music in the appropriate key and please note that NO TRACKS OR ACCAPELLA SINGING will be allowed). As both characters will need to play guitar in this show, candidates may chose to accompany themselves on guitar. Please note that guitar skills would be a bonus but are NOT a pre-requisite.

Candidates may be required to dance so should bring appropriate clothing.

JOHNNY CLEGG: Playing Ages: 16 – 40 years old. Ethnicity: White. Vocal: High Tenor. The Central character of the piece, the role requires a good dancer with experience or capability to learn Traditional African Dance. We see Johnny’s growth from age 16 to age 40. His personality is open, passionate, driven, and determined but, most of all; he is a unique man with an intense curiosity. Guitar and / Traditional African Dance is required for this character. Previous knowledge of these skills is a bonus but not a pre-requisite.

SIPHO MCHUNU: Playing Ages: 18 – 40 years old. Ethnicity: Black (Zulu). Vocal: High Tenor. A central character in this story the role requires a strong dancer. Sipho is a proud, traditional Zulu man who comes to Johannesburg from Makabaleni, Zululand. He has a great sense of humour and a passion for his traditions. Johnny and Sipho’s relationship is one of brotherhood and, of course, partnership, as they form Juluka. Guitar and Traditional African Dance will be required for this character. Previous knowledge of these skills is a bonus but not a pre-requisite.

Auditions will take place in Durban at the Playhouse Company’s Mayville Complex on February 1 with callbacks on February 2.

Auditions also take place in Johannesburg (January 30/313) and Cape Town (February 3/4).
