"Make things happen" will be the
prominent theme behind a set of skills-based workshops during 2014 aimed at
equipping and uplifting emerging filmmakers within the eThekwini Municipality.
The Independent Filmmaking Workshop -
previously known as the Zero-Budget Filmmaking Workshop - is a developmental
initiative between the Durban Film Office and non-profit organisation, the eThekwini
Filmmakers Association (EFA), which covers the ABC of filmmaking.
Set to take place on a monthly basis, the
first Independent Filmmaking Workshop 2014 will take place on Saturday (March 1)
from 09h00 to 16h30 at the Albany Hotel in Durban.
"As a developing industry, we are
pleased to be taking small steps in the right direction of creating an
environment where filmmakers are both proactive and self-sufficient," said
Durban Film Office Head Toni Monty. Unlike previous workshops, the monthly
workshops will be continuation of skills-training.”.
From
script to screen, the workshop will tackle practical filmmaking issues like
scriptwriting, budgeting, casting, lighting and sound, pitching, camerawork,
post-production and much more.
All filmmakers from the eThekwini
Municipality are welcome to attend.
"Local filmmakers will also have the
opportunity to work and learn alongside experienced independent filmmakers who
will be sharing their expertise and tips to making it in a competitive industry,"
added Monty.
Addressing the name change, EFA Chairperson
Andile Buwa said that workshops will provide a holistic approach to filmmaking
entrepreneurship, which will foster the development, production and promotion
of independent films.
"Independent filmmaking is a
much-needed skill to utilise in the mainstream or commercial film industry, and
forms an integral foundation for every filmmaker to build up their career and
experience,” Buwa said. "If you believe you have what it takes to create
to great film, you do not have to wait for others to make it happen, you can
make things happen yourself."
The Independent
Filmmaking Workshop will take place on March 1 from 09h00 to16h30 at the Albany
Hotel in Joe Slovo Street (Smith Street), Durban
