The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music will present Estelle
Kokot (UK), performing The Sound of You
on April 30.
Estelle Kokot is an extraordinary South African singer,
songwriter, arranger and pianist, born in the UK, raised in Zimbabwe and South
Africa. She debuted with South African Jazz super group Phambili, led by
bassist/composer Victor Ntoni and tenor saxophonist Duke Makazi.
The Sound of You
Songbook is a collaboration project with songwriters/producers Chico
Freeman and Jan Pulsford. Estelle encountered composer/producer/virtual artist
Jan Pulsford by chance. She has written, produced and toured with artists
including Thompson twins, Cyndi Lauper, Melanie and Darlene Love, amongst
others. Estelle fell in love with Jan’s tracks co-written with her long-time
writing partner Chico Freeman, a multi-reedman, composer and producer.
Estelle brings The
Sound of You Songbook (a collaboration project with songwriters/producers
Chico Freeman and Jan Pulsford) to South Africa with well-respected musicians;
bassist Herbie Tsoaeli and drummer Kevin Gibson. The recording of The Sound of You album in scheduled to
happen in South Africa in May.
Enjoy Estelle Kokot’s live performance on April 30 at the Centre
for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM), Level 2, Shepstone Building at UKZN Howard
College Campus . Doors open at 17h30 and music starts at 18h00. Entry R40 (R20
pensioners and R15 students).
