(Nompilo Jili & Ntsikelelo Mfingwana)

Eugene Ionesco’s The Bald Prima Donna has been given a new twist by director Brenda-Lee Cele who will stage her successful theatre production for the first time in Durban.

She has masterfully adapted it to a local setting, showcasing classic Absurdism in a 21st century South African context and brings, what is essentially a period piece, kicking and screaming into 2014!

This delightful absurdist play mirrors the ridiculousness of human interactions, as two couples from different cultures allow audiences to observe their relationships.

The cast features Nompilo Jili and Ntsikelelo Mfingwana as Mrs and Mr Mthethwa as well as Sbusiso Xaba and Affikile Peter as Mr and Mrs Vickery. Mandisa Skhakhane takes the part of The Maid with Nhlakanipho Ngubane as Fire Chief.

Ionesco's masterpiece and one of the first absurdist plays, The Bald Prima Donna is a brief and sharp-witted one-act ‘anti-play’. Its main characteristic is the utter breakdown of every form of communication, leaving the characters on a stage that becomes the empty reflection of their own vapidness.

The Bald Prima Donna runs from April 24 to 26 at 19h00 at Catalina Theatre, Wilson’s Wharf. Tickets R60 (R30 scholars) booked through Computicket outlets or visit
