Author of S’tshengise,
co founding member of Luminati and pen-wielding urban scribe, Manelis will
appear at Cool Runnings tonight (July 25).
Manelis is described as being one of the best lyricists out
of KZN, delivering thought-provoking raps with a subtle but enchanting honesty.
His knowledge of the streets and command of the Zulu language makes it easy to
deliver inspiring narratives, convincing the listener of his skill and genius.
Manelis draws inspiration from old African flavours,
particularly South African artists such as Harare, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and
Letta Mbulu to weave an unmatched genuine sound that has been described by
Isolezwe Newspaper as “ripe, matured and professional”.
His streetwise lyricism has an authentic Zulu feel with a
colloquial touch that speaks of the African urban experience on soulful and
sometimes alternatively experimental instrumental backdrops that inspire from a
village to a global sonic landscape.
The development of Manelis’ sound has panned over a ten-year
period through various recordings, performances and groups, more recently Luminati,
a live band he co-founded in 2010. His sound is referred to as an explosive mix
of genres such as jazz, rock and hip hop
Manelis will perform live at Off Tha Record at Cool Runnings
tonight (July 25) playing with a fresh band consisting of Njabulo Shabalala on
percussion, Sanele Phakathi on keys, Dalisu Ndlazi on bass and DJ Rawkidd on
the ones and twos.
The doors open at 21h00 and the show starts at midnight.
Tickets R50 at the door gets you in to what promises to be a night of good
vibes and “cool ridims”.
