A memorial
service for the late Mandla Mlotshwa will be held at the BAT Centre on Friday
(August 1) from 14h00 to 17h00.
A pianist, composer and arranger, Mlotshwa made his mark on the
Durban jazz scene in the early 80’s. His mentor, teacher and improvisation
master was the late pianist Bobby Mofokeng from Lamontville who inspired Mandla
to master the art of rhythm, harmony, improvisation, swing and chord structure.
Mandla came from a creative, artistic family, with his dad running
a community art centre at Hibberdene. Apart from his successful musical career,
he served for a period as Centre Manager at Stable Theatre.
“South Africa will certainly miss the talents of Mandla who
inspired many young musicians to take their musical career more seriously,”
says former Stable Theatre board member, Ramoll Bugwandeen, who is the Creative
Director Jazz at the Moon Hotel and Durban International World Music Festival.
