AIR GUITAR

The celebrated mini-musical Air Guitar is back with a new-look super-charged cast from August 20 at the Catalina Theatre.

Written and directed by Themi Venturas this very popular show was last seen in Durban at the Catalina Theatre 10 years ago.

The role of Darren Julies, the intrepid Air Guitar aspirant, will once again be played by the irrepressible Clinton Philander returning to Durban after six years on the Barnyard Theatre circuit. Venturas and Philander have successfully teamed up over the years in many mini-musicals including the smash-hit Cantina Tequila, Jamaican Jam, Good Vibrations, Shoo Bop and Air Guitar.

“Who hasn’t ever at some time in their life played Air Guitar on the dance floor or in their family lounge when one of those Air Guitar anthems blasts through the sound waves?” says director Themi Venturas.

This year’s version of Air Guitar brings the team together along with ace-guitarist, Barry Thomson and introduces Cuan Austin who replaces Rowan Stuart in the role of the Young Guitarist. Backing the three front-men is the tightest show band in the city led by Dawn Selby, with Mali Sewell on drums and Jason Andrew on bass.

Air Guitar tells the tale of a South African who. upon realizing that he has not done much with his life and is quickly approaching his 50’s, decides to enter the Air Guitar World Championships in Oulo, Finland. On the road to the championships, he enlists the assistance of two established guitarists, one older and one younger, to teach him the famous lick’s played by the great guitarists through the ages.

This often-hilarious adventure is peppered with the greatest Air Guitar anthems in history. These anthems combined with Darren’s own quirky thematic selections make for a toe-tapping, fun night out at the theatre.

Lovers of great guitar music can celebrate these anthems along with Mr Julies and even enter the ‘live’ Air Guitar competition every night. Up for grabs will be a top of the range musical instrument.

Air Guitar opens on August 20 and runs at Catalina Theatre, Wilsons Wharf until September 12 with performances nightly from Thursdays to Sundays with matinees on Saturdays and Sundays.
