One of the few
South African Ballet dancers that makes it overseas, Jemina Bowring was in
Durban recently on a home visit. Bowring’s mother, Rhalda Bowring runs a
ballet school in Durban, but her busy schedule only allows Jemina to see her
family twice a year at most.
Born in 1994.
Bowring started ballet at the age of five with Kaiens Olivier at the Berario
Recreational centre. At 12, she decided that this was what she loved and upped
her training. She trained with Martin Schonberg for 18 months, obtained her Rad
and Cecchetti advanced certificates, all with honours
In 2010, aged 15,
she entered the Prestigious International Prix De Lausanne ballet competition
in Switzerland. She got through to the semi-finals and was offered five scholarships
from five different international ballet schools in Europe and Canada. She
opted for the world famous and much admired, choreographer and director, John
Neumeier of the Hamburg Ballet Company School in Germany.
She spend three
years in the ballet school, then auditioned with about 600 dancers from all
over the world and was one of four dancers to get into the BundesJungendballet
Hamburg, working very closely with Neumeier himself.
Neumeier recently
offered her a place in his main Company, Hamburg Ballet, and she starts on August
25 - a dream come true for her!
