Forming part of the Playhouse Company’s 2014 South African
Women's Arts Festival in Durban from August 22 to 31, is a compelling drama
production titled Shades.
Directed by Ralph Lawson, the play stars multi-award winning
actress Lisa Bobbert with Aleks Robertson, Louis van Heerden and Jane Ross.
The story deals with Pearl, a single mother who bitterly
resents her husband for dying and leaving her with the prospect of a lonely old
age. Approaching middle age, she is struggling to come to terms with a
domineering mother, the needs of her ten-year-old son and her own desire for
fulfilment. We meet her as she prepares frantically for a rather special
night-out, which changes her life completely.
Sharman Macdonald’s play is thought-provoking and amusing,
offering a touching look at how people often justify their behaviour at the
expense of others in their pursuit of happiness.
Shades is
presented by arrangement with DALRO. Performances take place in the Playhouse
Loft tonight and tomorrow (August 29 and 30) at 19h30 with further performances
tomorrow and Sunday (August 30 and 31) at 15h00. Booking is at Computicket or
the Playhouse Box Office.
