A glittering awards ceremony at the International Convention
Centre honoured the 7th year of the eThekwini Living Legends Awards.
An impressive programme of song and dance was featured in
the evening’s programme
“The eThekwini Living Legends Awards is an initiative of our
city to recognise the greatness achieved by past or current residents of
eThekwini in various fields of human endeavour while they are still living,”
says the Mayor of eThekwini, Councillor James Nxumalo. “These Awards
acknowledge individuals with outstanding achievements, and those who have
demonstrated a sustained and extraordinary contribution to our legacy, in
various categories of expertise.”
The 2014 Living Legends representing the arts included theatre
photographer Val Adamson; Kim Mathews, champion of the Durban Music School; choreographer
Jay Pather; jazz pianist Themba Mkhize and maskandi artist Zibokwakhe
“Phuzekhemisi” Mnyandu.
Architect Rodney Harber; human rights activist Paddy Meskin
and Paddy Kearney, who is well-known as an activist for peace and justice, were
also honoured. Also acknowledged were karate sensei Muzomusha Lameck Chamane; Menzi
High School principal Felix Mshololo, Olympic swimming record holder Penny
Heyns; and anti-apartheid activist and cabinet minister, Jeff Radebe.
Greta Schoeman – founder of the Highway Hospice was honoured
as a Living Legend and Highway Hospice itself received an appreciation award as
did the Willowton Group.
