THE RETURN OF THE BOOLULU UNCLE

(Senzo Mthetwa as the Boolulu Uncle)

In 2010, KZN was taken by storm with a vibrant and skilful actor coming to the fore with a one man show called The Boolulu Uncle. The show won the coveted best play according to the Musho! Festival audience survey and went on to be nominated for five theatre awards of which it won three.

The Boolulu Uncle played to a sold-out run for nine weeks to high praise from international audiences visiting Durban over the World Cup season as well as rave reviews from press and audience alike.
The Dingalings Production Company now present The Return of the Boolulu Uncle as Senzo Mthethwa returns to Durban audiences with a sequel to the hit play.

This charming sequel to the coming-of-age tale sees the highly versatile Senzo continuing the story of his growing up as a young Zulu boy in the Hindu home of the Chettys. Filled with pathos and humour, the story is set to capture the hearts and minds of audiences and fill them with the promise of what an amalgamation of two age-old and beautiful traditions the Zulu and Hindu culture can bring.

The story spans 20 years and takes audiences on a number of humorous and energetic journeys as Senzo searches for his identity trapped in a society that compartmentalises race, colour, culture and tradition.

The play is co-written and directed by Dingalings stalwart Kumseela Naidoo and Koobeshen Naidoo together with Senzo Mthethwa and promises to be an entertaining storytelling at its best. Playing a host of characters, Senzo takes audiences on a captivating journey - from his sojourns on a taxi to a marriage proposal, to the annual temple celebrations and visit to the local hospital.

The Return of the Boolulu Uncle runs in the Playhouse Loft from September 16 to 21. Shows are 20h00 daily with matinees at 14h00 on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets R100 booked at Computicket at any Shoprite Checkers stores, the Playhouse box office or Computicket online.
