80’S REWIND

The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway is rewinding back in time as they prepare to stage the most daring 80’s rock show ever, 80’s Rewind, through the festive season from this evening (October 14) to January 11 2015.

They are talking retro fashion, dance and, of course, music that will bring audiences an evening packed with the most delightful surprises. The show features a colourful and versatile cast that will rewind to synth pop, new wave and arena rock in the most authentic 80’s style.

It was the golden age of synthesizer hits with and energetic anthems and, with everything from big hair and tight clothes to epic guitar solos and incredible voices, the 80's is considered to be the greatest era in music.

It was an important time in musical history. MTV brought about the music video, offering a whole new way to enjoy pop music; rap became main stream and exploded into what we know today as hip hop; the term "one hit wonder" entered into the vernacular; metal bands ruled the country; and there were the breakout successes of iconic pop superstars Madonna, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.

New wave music was part punk, part dance and part kitsch and made for some great pop hits. The synthesizer was the instrument of choice, and the music was danceable and fun.

MTV brought about a second British invasion with new wave bands like Duran Duran, The Police and Dire Straits, while the pop synth scene witnessed the likes of Culture Club and Depeche Mode. Alternative music also made its mark during this diverse decade with bands such as REM, The Cure and The Violent Femmes.

Another big piece of the 80’s puzzle is heavy metal or “hair metal” (think big-haired bands like Bon Jovi and Def Leppard) that was so popular at the time. Sometimes called pop metal or glam metal, it whittled heavy metal and hard rock down to a successful pop music formula.

Do you remember songs like The Safety Dance by Men Without Hats, Everybody Have Fun Tonight by Wang Chung, Tarzan Boy by Baltimora, or Respectable by Mel and Kim? Well, if not, 80’s Rewind will refresh your memory and get you dancing the Robo Cop, the Moon Walk and the Boogie Down like never before! 80’s Rewind features music from Tears For Fears, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Crowded House, Yazoo, Cyndi Lauper, Duran Duran and many more.

Audiences should get ready to rewind to the most favoured decade of the last 60 years at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway and prepare to party in authentic 80’s style! Ladies can relive the magic with big hair, shoulder pads, leg warmers, fingerless gloves and absolutely anything neon; while the men can get into character with boom boxes, mullet hairstyles and Miami Vice fashion. Remember, it’s hip to be square!

To accommodate festive season revelry, additional lunch time shows (starting at 13h30) have been added on November 27 and 28 as well as December 3 to 5 and 10 to 12.

The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway will also stage their very popular Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve shows. The Christmas Eve show will take place on December 24, so will be at the normal ticket price of R155 per person. The New Year’s Eve show starts at 21h00 and will feature an extra set and countdown into 2015 before a DJ takes over the dance floor. Tickets for the show on December 31 will cost R340 per person.

Tickets for 80’s Rewind are R155 pp from Wednesday to Saturday (discounted specials of R120 pp every Tuesday night and R110 pp for Sunday matinees. For bookings and enquiries, phone The Barnyard Theatre on 031 566 3045 or visit www.barnyardtheatres.co.za/gateway
