(John Didlick &
Gary McKenzie with Grant Bell in front)
This weekend sees the staging at Tina’s Hotel in Kloof of one
the Gee Jays’ earliest successes, an hilarious compilation of songs, jokes and
sketches entitled Not The Full Monty!
Originally staged at the El Guappo restaurant in Westville,
the show was intended to “capture the hype around the movie, The Full Monty released in 1977, and was
billed as “Durban’s answer to Yorkshire's answer to the Chippendales”!
Not only is it Not The
Full Monty, but it is also not the Two
Ronnies, not Michael Jackson’s other glove or Not The Nine O’Clock News, but it’s also not to be taken seriously.
The Gee Jays consist of the
irrepressible team of John Didlick, Gary McKenzie and Grant Bell.
At the time, the production was one of the most successful
shows in Durban featuring numbers like Under
The Boardwalk, New York, Roy Orbison’s Only The Lonely, Things, Heartbreak
Hotel, Jailhouse Rock, Calendar Girl,
Sweet Caroline, YMCA and Greased
Lightning.
“We even find out who “ALICE” actually is!” quip the cast. “As
the title of the review suggests, this is NOT the full Monty. But it may be considered at least half a
Monty. With a series of gyrations we
meet the founders of the male dancing group “The Chippendales”, CHIP AND
DALE. A veritable feast for the eyes.
Specially if you are into the “Save the Whale” campaign. There’s also some
seriously good close harmony thrown in for good measure.”
Be warned that some of the material in this review contains
scenes of nudity or sex, strong language and violence. Viewer discretion is
advised (not really). If you don’t laugh, you’ll cry!
The show runs for eight performances from October 10 to
November 2 and is presented in “supper theatre” format.
Buffet supper, will be served from 19h00. The show starts at
20h30, and on Sunday, lunch (carvery lunch) is from 12h30 with the show starting
at 14h00. Tickets R195 pp for the
meal and show. Show only option available at R120pp (no meal included). Bookings
can be made on 031 764 7843.
