Award winning dancer/choreographer Jarryd Watson will host
the second annual Durban Dance Movement Festival (DDMF) at the Catalina Theatre
on Durban’s harbour Wilson’s Wharf from November 28 to 30.
Set against the backdrop of Durban Harbour, Dance Movement
creates a platform for a City dance festival which will be vibrant with
showcases from professional dancers, studios, community groups, street groups
and youth groups as well as community performances from dance styles ranging in
hip hop, contemporary, street and break dancing and other styles.
This festival was inspired by the Wentworth Youth Festival
and over the years has culminated in the Durban Dance Movement Festival which
is a platform for those groups and dance communities around KZN that seldom
have an opportunity to present their works to a bigger audience at such a
festival.
“I am beyond excited with what the Festival has to offer
this year and even though we are only in our second year running, the high
calibre of dancers this year has already set the bar even higher for next year!”
said artistic director Jarryd Watson.
“With celebrating 20 years of democracy the Durban Dance
Movement festival is true reflection of one of the many milestones achieved in
our democracy and what the future holds for our youth and born frees of South
Africa today.”
Over the weekend the festival will showcase performances
where groups will have an opportunity to win sponsorships to further develop
their junior and senior level dancers. The festival will also host a skills
dance development workshop open to all dancers and people wanting to further
their skills in Hip hop, breakdancing, contemporary and tap dancing on November
30. The workshop will be hosted by the best of Durban choreographers such as
Casey Swales (contemporary) bboy Preston ‘kayzo’ Kyd (break dancing) Jarryd
Watson (hip hop) and Lynn Totham (tap).
The Festival will also showcase
professional works from training companies and groups like Dance Movement, 031
Floor Assassins, Rhythmic Dance, The Studio, Chizboyz Productions, Kwa Mashu
School of Dance and Blue Fire Productions to hopefully generate funding for more
dance companies in Durban.
Durban Dance Movement Festival 2014 showcases take place on November
