Former Durban singer/actor Joel Zuma is presenting the
premier of his new play, Music in the Air
- the musical at the Playhouse.
The show pays tribute to 80's and 90's South Africa's pop
music and its showcases the story and the music of likes of Brenda Fassie,
Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Letta Mbulu, Mahlathini and Mahhotela Queens, Soul
Brothers, Chicco Twala, Juluka, PJ Powers, Vusi Ximba and others.
Originally from Pietermaritzburg, Joel Zuma is breaking new
ground with this musical theatre production. His multi-award winning creative
team comprises Mncedisi Shabangu (director), Victor Masondo (musical director)
and Thabo Rapoo (choreographer). Shabangu’s skill as a storyteller won him a
FNB Vita for best director. Masondo has produced music for Miriam Makeba, Lucky
Dube, Soul Brothers, Freshly Ground and many others. Rapoo won the Standard
Bank Young Artist of the year in 2009 and this musical brings him back to his
pantsula roots.
Youth from Zizezande Youth Development in Umlazi have been
included in the musical to give them exposure and stage experience under the
expert team.
Music in the Air - the
musical is presented by Maduma Productions in association with The
Playhouse Theatre, supported by the National Arts Council (NAC) and eThekwini
Municipality.
There is one more performance in the Playhouse Opera this afternoon (November16) at
