SMAC Gallery in Stellenbosch is exhibiting at ARTISSIMA
(International Fair of Contemporary Art) in Torino, Italy.
Featured artists Helen A Pritchard and Sandile Zulu are both
originally from KwaZulu-Natal.
Pritchard was born in Durban in 1975 and currently lives and
works in London, UK. She completed her
Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art at the University of East London, London in 2009.
That same year, she was awarded the Stanley Spencer Scholarship and went on to
complete her Masters Degree in Painting at the Royal College of Art in London
in 2011. Recent solo exhibitions include Between
Object and Place at SMAC Gallery in Cape Town and Moths, Drones & Drainpipes at Rove Projects in London, both in
2013.
Zulu was born in 1962 in Ixopo and is currently based in
Fordsburg in Johannesburg. He studied at ELC Art and Craft Centre, Rorke’s
Drift (1982), the Durban Technikon (now the Durban University of Technology)
and received his BA in Fine Art from the University of the Witwatersrand in
1993. Zulu has exhibited across South Africa, Europe and the United States. His
work was shown at the 2nd Johannesburg Biennale in 1997 and in 1999/2000, he
formed part of the Liberated Voices:
Contemporary Art from South Africa exhibition at the Museum for African Art
in New York. Zulu featured in the Artists in Dialogue series at the Smithsonian
National Museum of African Art in Washington DC in 2011.
