(Barry Truter)
The visual arts
world is saddened at the death of artist and printmaker Barry Truter who passed
away on December 3 after a short period of ill health.
“This is a terrible
shock,” says Tony Starkey, former Head of the Fine Arts & Jewellery Design
Department at the Durban University of Technology where Truter lectured for
over 30 years before his retirement two years ago.
“He was an
absolutely brilliant printmaking lecturer,” adds Starkey. “He lectured first
years and generations of first year students benefited from his skills. In his
own right, he was a highly accomplished printmaker but he shunned publicity and
exhibitions. He was incredibly fastidious and always well-prepared. His sense
of discipline, which is so critical in printmaking, in turn rubbed off onto the
students. There are piles of his work that have never been seen. The artists
community now needs to hold an exhibition of his work as a tribute to his
contribution to arts and artists in Kwa-Zulu-Natal.”
