Veteran actor-playwright
Hamish Kyd, an Ethekwini Living Legend, returns to the Catalina Theatre stage
this festive season for late night performances of his acclaimed one-hander, Knowing You... Knowing Me which
humorously explores the issues of intolerance and bigotry.
Brought back
by popular demand, the poignant comedy looks at an important chapter in the
life of Lenny Stalk, a welder and self-made man. When his son, Otis, a final
year Fashion Design student, decides it
is time to come out of the closet, Lenny frantically does all he can to
“un-gay” him.
Theatre
doyenne and artSMart website owner/editor Caroline Smart, reviewing a 2008
season of the work, wrote: “Hamish’s distinctive sense of humour and empathy
for the human spirit is very much to the fore.”
Keith Millar,
in a 2013 artSMart review of the work, wrote: “Hamish Kyd is a force of nature.
Alone on stage without any set or props he keeps his audience entertained, very
amused, moved - and even a little educated - as he performs his very, very
funny little gem of a production.”
While issues
dealt with in the play remain internationally-topical, Kyd says he has also
updated his script to deal with current issues in the South African political
arena for the show’s current revival which is directed by his 27-year-old
daughter, actress Leveen Kyd, a UKZN BA Drama and Performance graduate.
Kyd’s musical Jimbo has been staged at the Playhouse
on several occasions, as have his shows, Motown
Story, Southern Soul, Vikela and the Vita Award-winning Taxi Jam. His first novel, Charlie, was published in 2008, followed
by his second novel, Muti. As with
his play of the same title, Knowing You ...
Knowing Me, his latest novel, focuses on the evils of homophobia. Hamish
has also scripted six radio dramas which have been broadcast on air. Hamish
performed in Clinton Marius’s long-running comic radio soapie, Lollipop Lane,
as well as in the show’s recently stage revival, Lollipop Lane – The Big Biscuit Bake-Off at the Catalina Theatre.
Performances
of Knowing You ... Knowing Me are from
Wednesdays to Saturdays at 21h00, and on Sundays at 16h00. The production can
be enjoyed either as a self-standing piece, or under the banner, Bruin oues Back To Back, as it runs in
tandem with the premiere season at the Catalina Theatre of Clinton Marius’s new
one-woman comedy, B!#ch Stole My Doek.
Set in
Wentworth, B!#ch Stole My Doek.is a
raucous satire starring Shona Johnson. This wickedly funny work pokes fun at a
war of words between two women over a missing item of laundry.
