The Durban University of Technology starts the year with a
musical flurry – staging the iconic Lionel Bart evergreen, Oliver!, based on the Charles Dickens classical story.
Oliver! is a
delicious feel-good tale of young Oliver Twist and a host of colourful and
eccentric characters. It is also a significant social commentary looking at the
miserable life of a vulnerable young orphan living in Dickensian London.
DUT’s Drama and Production Studies Department will host auditions
for boy sopranos age 7 to 13 with acting skills and the ability to perform.
The second phase of auditions will take place on January 19 from
09h00 at DUT’s Drama Department. Parking is at Gate 6. The audition piece is Food, Glorious Food which can be sent to
auditionees on request, but another song which can show the range of the voice
is also acceptable.
On the day of the audition, further arrangements such as
rehearsal times and transport will be discussed.
The boys will be trained for the performance musically by
Madlen Tzankova and for staging by Pamela Tancsik plus stage manager and
theatre manager. An indemnity letter needs to be signed when agreement has been
confirmed to participate in the production.
Oliver! is
family-friendly and boasts a host of much-loved songs: Food Glorious Food; Oliver!; Consider Yourself; You’ve got to Pick a
Pocket or Two; As Long as He Needs Me; I’d Do Anything and Oom-Pah-Pah. It has had a myriad
incarnations with West End and Broadway versions, film versions and countless
school and amateur renditions.
The cast will be a combination of DUT students and young
children who made it through open auditions. It will be directed by Dr Pamela
Tancsik and musical director is Madlen Tzankova.
Oliver! will be
staged from March 22 to 28 at the newly-refurbished Courtyard Theatre.
