Concerts SA is proud to announce the results of the 2014
edition of the Music Mobility Fund. Initiated in 2013 by the British Council’s
Connect ZA and the SAMRO Foundation, this funding mechanism offers
opportunities for South African musicians to undertake live music-related
activities. A total of 16 applications were successful and will be supported in
South Africa (10 projects) and in the SADC region (six projects), including
countries such as Botswana, Swaziland, Tanzania and Mozambique.
This year’s recipients include Carlo Mombelli, Ihhashi
Elimhlope, Frank Paco, Project Elo, Luna Paige, Steve Dyer, Thandi Ntuli,
Madala Kunene, Josie Field and Laurie Levine, Dave Reynolds & Pops
Mohamed’s Acoustic Masala, and Lindiwe Maxolo, among others.
The Music Mobility Fund received 118 proposals ranging from
established music practitioners to emerging musicians. Music professionals were
invited to apply in September for funding from a National Mobility Fund (for
projects in South Africa, specifically KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and
Gauteng), and a Regional Mobility Fund (for projects taking place in SADC
countries, except South Africa). The standard of submissions was extremely
high, making the task of selecting successful applicants very difficult. The
final selection was based on alignment with the objectives of the Music
Mobility Fund and conditions as set out in the call for proposals.
Designed to help musicians, music industry professionals and
organisations build on already established domestic success and develop
connections, markets and audiences for their work, the fund provides support
towards travel and transportation; per diems; material costs (hiring of
backline and sound equipment), accommodation and visas.
The Fund is administered by Concerts SA, a joint South
African/Norwegian project housed under the auspices of the Stakeholder Hub
within the SAMRO Foundation. Concerts SA also receives technical support from
Rikskonsertene. The project aims to stimulate live music in South Africa by
finding and implementing ways to create regular, sustainable performance
platforms. It also aims to develop an interest in and appreciation of live music
by showcasing music performances and conducting workshops at schools.
