NOTTIES KNITATHON

The Notties Escape calls all KZN and Midlands Knitwits to take up the ’67 Blankets Challenge at The Notties Knitathon on January 18 in Nottingham Road.

“Calling on all Midlands "Knitwits for Madiba" and "Happy Hookers" taking part in the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day project …come along and enjoy a get-together in Nottingham Road,” says teacher and well-known actress, Annie Grealy, who is also the KZN Midlands chief Knitwit.

“We came together last year at the Mandela Capture Site… it’s time to amass once again! Please take some time to help us achieve our goal. Help us in our attempt to break the world record at the Union Buildings in April. A sea of colourful handmade blankets at the feet of Madiba and an aerial photo of how our nation is being woven together through bright colourful thread could become iconic and show the world what we are doing, stitch by stitch, to warm thousands of people less fortunate than ourselves in the cold winter months in the name of our beloved Nelson Mandela.

“Bring your wool, needles … completed and semi completed blankets,” she adds “and be a part of this amazing initiative and help to break the world record at the Union Buildings. So many people around all of South Africa are working really hard to reach the target of 21,000 blankets (to mark our 21st anniversary of democracy) come April this year!

The current world record is 7,800 blankets at a cathedral in Helsinki. We, as South Africans can beat this!!! But time is of the essence!!”

Airlink and Stuttaford Van Lines have come on board to transport blankets from every corner of South Africa to the Union Buildings - and then return the same quantity of blankets to the respective regions in time for distribution when the cold hits us.

Take your own chairs. You can buy wool and needles right there at Scatter Box.

The Notties Knitathon will take place from 11h00 to 14h00 on January 18 outside the Gingerbread House and Lilac Crane in Nottingham Road.
