Great news for South African concert goers! Sir James
Galway, living legend of the flute and a leading icon in the world’s classical
music arena for many years, will tour South Africa at the helm of the internationally
renowned Zurich Chamber Orchestra and select members of the South African
National Youth Orchestra early in February.
Hosted by the South African National Youth Orchestra and
supported by the Embassy of Switzerland and Pro Helvetia, the Galway-Zurich
Chamber Orchestra lightning tour of South Africa will include a performance in the
magnificent Durban City Hall, South Africa’s largest acoustic venue, on February
9 at 19h00 in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic.
Other concert dates include Johannesburg (February 6), Pretoria (February 7) and Cape Town (February 11)
Works to be featured on the programme include Franz Joseph
Haydn’s Symphony No 59 in A Major, popularly known as The Fire Symphony, composed in 1769; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s 1778
virtuoso showpiece, the Flute Concerto in G Major; Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s
celebrated Serenade for Strings in C Major, composed in 1880; and the engaging
Concerto for 2 Flutes in G Major by the late 18th century composer, Domenico
Cimarosa, in which Sir James Galway shares the solo spot with his wife, the
distinguished flautist, Lady Jeanne Galway.
The concert in the Durban City Hall takes place at 19h00 on
