The Rickshaw Collective, based at 106 Williams Road in Umbilo, is hosting an open morning on January 17, for people interested in participating in the arts to visit the venue, meet the stakeholders and be briefed about their plans and programme of classes.

Dance, physical theatre and body conditioning methodologies are on offer and the classes cater to varied levels of experience.

“Precinct 106 in Umbilo, is a space for innovation and artistic vision. The Rickshaw Collective, based at 106, provides a platform for current and upcoming performing artists to develop skills and produce work. For those with day jobs and commitments outside of the arts, we want to create a place where you may discover or cultivate a passion of yours,” says Shelby Strange – one of the innovators.

“Rickshaw’s group of committed artists recognise the collective talent that Durban has to offer. We aim to draw together those invested and active in the arts to create a cycle of sustainable creativity,’ she explained. “We will showcase work that is to be conducted at the studio and hold ‘micro-classes’ in a variety of dance disciplines and physical theatre methodologies.”

Vusi Makhanya, Julia Wilson, Thobi Maphanga, Bronwyn Botha, Preston Kyd and Shelby Strange are the practitioners who will be leading the classes.

The Rickshaw Studio is on the 3rd floor of Precinct 106’s main building. This area of the precinct is used as a base for artists and practitioners during their creative or training processes. A 9 x 9 m area of the factory floor has been designated for training, rehearsal and workshop purposes.

The Rickshaw Collective, based at 106 Williams Road in Umbilo, will take place on January 17 from 09h30 until 12h30, Entrance to the open morning is free, and all are welcome. Classes start the following week, January 19.
