January 27 saw the opening of the prestigious KZNSA Annual Members’
Exhibition, with members attending from far and wide to celebrate their
artworks exhibited proudly on the gallery walls. With the threat of
loadshedding unavoidable, the exhibition was opened early by KZNSA President
Sheryl Msomi and the winners were announced to a great response.
First Prize: Lee Scott – Hand
Held
Second Prize: Lara Mellon – We All Seek To Be Free
Third Prize: Karen Bradtke – The Best Laid Plans of Mice and Artists
Merit Award: Michele Silk – TYRIBEL…After Delacroix, Baselitz and Freud
Most Promising: Mthobisi Maphumulo – Ulaka Lwabaphansi (The Anger of Underground Creatures)
The floating trophy and generous prize money to the value of
R20,000 is donated to the KZNSA Members’ Exhibition by the Emanuel family, in
memory of Durban painter and long-standing member of the KZNSA, Joan Emanuel.
This donation has directly resulted in raising the standard of the show.
Judges were Tony Starkey (Honorary Research Associate, DUT
Fine Art and Jewellery Design), Mduduzi Xakaza (Director at the Durban Art
Gallery) and Val Coppin-Shaw (Gallerist and KZNSA Gallery Committee Member).
The KZNSA Annual Members' Exhibition can be viewed in the
gallery until February 15. The KZNSA
