This weekend, Durbanites have a chance to pitch in and help
67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day reach its goal of 21,000 handmade blankets
by mid-April.
The award-winning campaign will host a
Knitathon/Crochetathon this Saturday (March 28, 2015) at Glenwood Village,
Moore Road, Glenwood from 10h00 to 13h00. The aim is for participants to make
as many 20cm squares as possible to contribute to communal blankets that will
be handed out to the less fortunate in time for winter.
Wool, needles and hooks will be on sale upstairs in the
Centre at One Stitch at a Time. For those not keen on knitting or crocheting,
donations of wool will be gratefully received. Donated wool is given to the
many volunteers who cannot afford to purchase yarn themselves, but want to make
blankets for this worthy cause.
67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day kept over 6,000 people
warm last winter (2014), the year of the campaign's inception, but has set
itself a far higher target this year -- to keep a lot more people warm in
winter, and to break a world record. All blankets collected will be placed at
the feet of a giant statue of the late Nelson Mandela and across the lawns of
Pretoria's Union Buildings on April 21. Iconic aerial photographs will be taken
before the blankets are handed out to beneficiaries.
