The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music will present the VCU
AFRICA COMBO on March 11.
This concert comes as a part of the Virginia Commonwealth University
/University of KwaZulu-Natal “Jazz Bridge to Greater Understanding"
community engagement project, which is now in its third year. This exchange
project is supported by the VCU Global Education Office and VCUarts, and VCU
Music.
Throughout the last year, both teams explored the parallels
in racial/cultural divides in their respective cities, Richmond (the former
Confederate capital) and Durban. The project aims to explore the common
experiences between the home communities of participants by bringing scholars
and students of African-based music and culture to both campuses.
Student bassist Jordan Mason will join the students
returning to the VCU Africa Combo: Trey Sorrells (alto sax), Cody Reifsteck
(tenor sax), Roger Pouncey Jr. (guitar), Ryan Moses (piano), and Cleandre
Foster (drums), along with Prof. Antonio Garcia (trombone).
The UKZN Jazz Storytellers Ensemble consists of Kwena Elvis
Ramahuta (voice), Rogan van den Berg (guitar), Lungelo Ngcobo (piano), Dalisu
Ndlazi (bass), Jude Ganasen (drums), and Burton Naidoo (piano) with director
Neil Gonsalves.
In this collaborative concert, they will play commissioned
compositions by Trey Sorrells and Prof Antonia Garcia from VCU, and by Lungelo
Ngcobo and Burton Naidoo from UKZN.
