(Petra Conrads &
Simon Milliken)
The second concert of the 2015 Series will take place on May
31 at the Church of the Mariannhill Monastery.
The programme is titled Earth’s
Sounds and audiences are invited to prepare themselves for a journey
through the unusual with colourful and expressive music!
Simon Milliken (Bass), Petra Conrads (Flute) feature in this
programme where sounds of the Earth, Water, Fire, Chaos and birds like the
nightingale, the cuckoo, the quail, the chicken can be heard.
They will perform pieces with striking musical descriptions
and depictions: Jean-Féry Rebel’s extraordinary Les Elemens conjures up Chaos, Earth, Air, Fire and Water, as well
as the magical calls of the nightingale and other birds. It is scored for
strings, woodwinds, brass and timpani.
Johann Joseph Fux’s Overture No.4 in D Major also portrays
the nightingale, along with the cuckoo and the quail, while Jean-Philippe
Rameau’s 6ème concert humorously
imitates the chicken. Handel's Concerto Grosso op 3 no 1 for strings, flutes
and oboes is also on the programme.

of the Mariannhill Monastery. Tickets R120 at the door. Ample and safe parking
