Music? is a new musical revue devised and directed by Hamish Kyd,
highlighting the contrasts between Soul legends from Atlantic Records and those
from Tamla Motown. The programme includes music from Soul Legends such as:
Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder & Marvin Gaye.
Do you love Soul Music?
brings all these soul greats together in one show - using the professional
talents of Sam Marais, Praline Ross, Anthony Joseph, Bruce Eaves, Kerzia de
Vries, Pinkie Mtshali. and Gail Snyman.
Hamish Kyd has produced, directed and acted in several
theatre works over 27 years. His debut novel, Charlie, was published in 2008. In the latter half of the 1980s Kyd
became active in community theatre in Newlands East and then KZN, training
children and producing shows (The Bojangles Entertainers).
He has enjoyed success at the Playhouse with his musical
revue, The Motown Story, in 1988 and
his musical, Jimbo, which was first
staged at the Playhouse in 1993. Subsequent successes bearing his imprint at
the Playhouse include Southern Groove
and as co-creator of Taxi Jam. He
received a Living Legend Award from the Ethekwini Municipality for his contribution
to the arts in KZN.
Sam Marais is a well-known name among Durban audiences,
appearing in numerous shows at the Playhouse before moving to Turkey where he
worked extensively on the entertainment circuit before returning to South
Africa.
Praline Ross is actively involved in community projects and
currently conducts the St Anne’s Family Choir. In 2007, she was one of the
local support acts at the ICC Durban with George Benson and Al Jarreau
performing on the same night. Anthony Joseph is an accomplished entertainer, MC
and musician. He currently plays with the Dukes Combo and is well known for his
Elvis Presley renditions.
Bruce Eaves is currently the resident singer at The Square
Boutique Hotel and Spa on La Lucia Ridge and performs regularly at various
restaurants in and around Durban.”
Gail Snyman is a veteran Durban theatre personality and
community activist. She has staged work previously focusing on issues and
identity with particular reference to the Coloured community! Kerzia De Vries is
a recording artist, who was involved in a show in 2008, called Jae with Zzzing, which was devised and
directed by Hamish Kyd.
Do you love Soul Music?
is presented by The South African Community Arts Network (SA CAN). Performances
take place tonight (May 29) at 20h00 at St John’s in The Parish of Sydenham, 80
Rippon Road, Sydenham. and Holy Family Newlands tomorrow (May 30) at 19h30. Tickets
