The UKZN School of Arts (Music) is planning a series of Jazz
Education workshops to be presented by Prof Mike Rossi from UCT in June,
August, September, October and November this year.
Focusing on Jazz Pedagogy (an introduction to teaching Jazz
in primary and high school; Jazz in the current curriculum, teaching Jazz
generally), and specifically the development of wind instruments in Jazz, these
workshops aim to develop jazz education in formal and informal educational
settings in KwaZulu-Natal.
“In an effort to build relationships with local schools,
UKZN invites Music teachers/facilitators to attend a meeting with the UKZN Jazz
Studies staff and Prof Mike Rossi from UCT where we’d like to hear from YOU what
you/your school/project’s Jazz education needs and/or areas of interest are,” explains
Debbie Mari from the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at UKZN which will host
some of the workshops.
“We’d like to establish whether your school/facility might
host one of these workshops where your students would participate and whether
any schools are team teaching or collaborating with each other. Dates, times
and venues for these workshops will be discussed at this meeting,” she adds.
The meeting will take place on May 15 from 15h00 to 17h00pm
at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music, Howard College campus, UKZN. For
