(Ildo Nandja)
The UKZN’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music will present
Ildo Nandja and Friends tomorrow (May 13).
Ildo Nandja and Friends is collaboration between
bassist/vocalist Ildo Nandja, guitarist Sebastian Goldswain, pianist Sanele
Phakathi and drummer Sidney Rash.
The four members decided to get together for a concert
dedicated to peace in the aftermath of violence South Africa recently
witnessed. As individuals who studied and work together, they share a common
love for jazz and the belief that music is a universal language and a means
through which humanity can come together.
The repertoire will be a blend of original compositions
ranging from Afro Jazz, country, Latin and world music. The musical diversity
reflects each member’s individual experiences and the result is a combination
of different playing styles and influences.
Ildo Nandja (double/electric bass and vocals), was born in
Maputo, Mozambique. From a young age he engaged with playing music, starting
with percussion instruments. Through his involvement in a local music and dance
company, Ildo began playing the timbila, a traditional xylophone. His
dedication has led him to perform in productions, festivals in France, Angola,
Namibia, Portugal, the Netherlands, Libya, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia and
Reunion Island.
Nandja is a graduate of the Jazz and Popular Music programme
at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, majoring in electric and double bass. He
regularly represents UKZN at the Virginia Commonwealth University in the USA as
part of an ongoing exchange between the institutions. Recognized as an
outstanding and disciplined bass player and soloist, he has collaborated with
countless established local and international musicians. His compositions
incorporate traditional African rhythms and melodies with various world music
styles and contemporary and Latin jazz. His debut album is due for release
later this year.
He will be joined by well-loved and talented Durban
musicians Sebastian Goldswain (guitar), Sanele Phakathi (piano), and Sidney
Rash (drums) who is known for his intense groove and versatility on the drums
