Proudly South African award winning fashion designer Bianca Warren,
will be collaborating with the African Art Centre by showcasing her latest
fashion designs at the African Art Centre Winter Fashion Show tomorrow (June 24)
at 17h30.
Bianca Warren has initiated her own production line, and
personally oversees the production of her garments. Her brand specializes in
woman's wear casual and evening wear. Owner of two flagship stores in Durban,
she supplies a number of boutiques in South Africa and creates employment for a
several women from her community.
To complement her garments, beaders from rural KwaZulu
Natal, who participated in skills development projects facilitated by the
Centre developed a special range of beaded jewellery in a variety of colours
and combinations. The skills development workshops aim at developing new skills
and techniques and encourage the production of works of originality and of the
highest quality.
In view of the high levels of unemployment, the production
of craft has become a significant source of income particularly within rural
and low-income communities in KwaZulu Natal. Although the global market for
South African craft is growing, the production thereof has been compounded by a
number of factors including repetitive reproduction of designs and products
which suppress innovation and creativity and limits the range of new products offered
to demanding consumers.
The African Art Centre recognizes that the success of its
crafters lies in the development and initiation of new products and designs and
the production of innovative high quality market related products. The centre
currently supports approximately 400 crafters who generate a sustainable income
from their handmade products which are retailed from the shop and gallery in
Florida Road.
The Fashion show takes place on June 24 at 17h30 for 18h00. A cash
bar is available. The African Art Centre is situated at 94 Florida Road. For
