Curator and owner of Imbizo Gallery, Isabel Roos, has put together a week of exquisite art, a dash of wine tasting and a dose of comedy in the form of live theatre- all taking place at two neighbouring venues at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre.

Beira Alta Restaurant will host Barbie Meyer’s new play Bosman in the Gallows, which offers a hilarious and powerful piece of theatre based on Herman Charles Bosman’s book Cold Stone Jug.

Imbizo Gallery will host Into Thin Air, an exhibition of exquisite paintings and bronze sculpture.

Barbie tackles her sixth play based on this infamous author’s work. She has performed her one-woman shows all over South Africa from cities, villages and is a regular at the Grahamstown Festival amongst other festivals. “You cannot believe where lovers of Bosman’s stories live and hide out – they’re everywhere,” she laughs.

Her new play is taken from his iconic book entitled Cold Stone Jug. This book’s rise to classic status has been unstoppable, and is now widely considered the founding text of all South African prison writings.

“Expect to laugh…and to learn a little prison slang…or ‘colourful, earthy conversation’,” says Meyer. “At the age of 21 Bosman was sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of his stepbrother. He claimed he thought his brother was an intruder although it was generally conceded that he did it in a fit of rage. This book is a semi-autobiographical book of these experiences: powerful, witty, courageous and in places – just darn funny! One ends up laughing at the pure humanness of the whole situation – it’s a kind of a dark humour – you laugh when you really know you shouldn’t. It’s filled with pathos and power.  I have to admit that I did sneak in an Oom Schalk Story at the end of this play – how could I possibly resist?”

Bosman in the Gallows is directed by Marke Meyer and has performances on June 9 and 10 at 18h00 for 19h00 in supper theatre style at the Beira Alta Restaurant in the Ballito Lifestyle Centre.

Patrons should start off at Imbizo Gallery (next door to the Restaurant) at 18h00 where they will be served with a glass of sherry and enjoy a free wine-tasting presented by Hermanuspietersfontein as well as a preview of the art exhibition entitled Into Thin Air. The art exhibition features sculptor Marke Meyer and painters Nicolaas Roos, Mpenja, Frances Duarte, Steve van der Schyff and Everett Duarte.

Dinner and show will start at the Beira Alta Restaurant at 19h00. Tickets R80 for show plus a three-course meal at R195p.p. Booking is essential as space is limited. Contact 032 946 1937 or 082 897 0190 or email:
