Fabulous stories with a moral ... and a twist in the tail
will be the featured programme on Monday (June 29) in the Mondays @ Six at St
Clements series. The stories will be read by Gisele Turner, Philippa Savage and
Pieter Scholtz.
The fable is one of the most enduring forms of folk
literature, spread abroad less by literary anthologies than by oral
transmission. Fables are wholly accessible to adults, including, as they often
do, a mildly subversive subtext or lightly satirical elements.
The stories in this presentation include humorous and
unsettling debates between the Creator and a creature he has created: Gecko and
the Moon, The Soul of Frog and Star-crossed Lovers. The final two stories,
Imfukumfuzi the Mole and The Ugly Caterpillar, focus on the tokoloshe, that
mischievous,fun-loving imp who causes chaos and consternation through his
impudence and precocity:
