JIM GORISSEN

(Jim Gorissen)

The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music will present Nederland’s guitarist Jim Gorissen on July 29.

Gorissen is a regular visitor in Durban. In 2012 he had an opportunity to play with local band Masquenada and local musician Shomon Daniel, at the Spogweni festival. He returned annually and performed with a range of well-loved local musicians at The Jazzy Rainbow and the KZNSA Gallery.

He will play with a local band and mix music from the hinterlands of Brazil with known repertoire from big cities like Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, and Sao Paulo. The Samba, Bossa Nova, Partido alto Frevo and numbers form a swinging and cheerful palette of rhythm, melody and harmony.

Gorissen is a multi-talent as illustrated by his activities in various fields such as Salsa and Latin, swing and jazz, rock and pop, North African Rai, etc. He has been a teacher since 2003 and manages his own school "Guitar World".

Jim Gorrisen will be joined by Logan Byrne (double bass); Shem Mahabeer (piano); Bruce Baker (drums), and Richard Ellis (percussions) with special guest Thulile Zama (Heels over Head) and powerful Shomon on vocals.

The performance takes place on July 29 at 18h00 at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM), Level 2, Shepstone Building at UKZN Howard College Campus. Doors open at 17h30 and the show starts at 18h00. Admission R50 (R30 pensioners and R15 students)
