The 5th Unisa National Piano Competition is in its final
stage.
Among the three
semi-finalists in the Jazz Category was Lungelo Ngcobo from Durban. The
first half of the final round will be dedicated to the jazz finalists, each
performing in a trio setup with seasoned musicians Rob Watson (drums) and
Victor Masondo (bass). The names of the finalists in the Jazz Category will be
announced after conclusion of the third round session for the Jazz Category.
Finalists in the Classical Category They are Willem de Beer
from Pretoria and Megan-Geoffrey Prins from Riversdale. These two candidates
have competed against nine other talented and dedicated young pianists and have
performed almost two hours of memorized music that was near flawless, before
passing through to the final round with orchestra.
The final round takes place on July 18 at 19h00 in the Z K
Matthews Great Hall at Unisa in Pretoria. Willem de Beer will perform the
fourth piano concerto by Beethoven, followed by Rachmaninov’s third concerto
performed by Megan-Geoffrey Prins.
The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by
Eric Rycroft. Tickets for the final round are sold at Computicket. The two
piano concertos will be performed after interval.
