(“The Inyanga”, oil on
board by Joseph Manana)
Running until August 23 in the Tatham Art Gallery in
Pietermaritzburg is the exhibition, Generous Friends: FOTAG Acquisitions
For the last 30 years, the Friends of the Tatham Art Gallery
(FOTAG) has generously assisted the Gallery to acquire works for its permanent
collection. This has occurred particularly at times when funding from the
Municipality for the purchase of art works has been reduced or cut altogether.
FOTAG committee members run an annual programme of events at
the Gallery in order to raise funds for this purpose. This exhibition gives an
overview of interesting and important art works that have been acquired for the
permanent collection through the efforts of these busy but dedicated friends.
One such art work is Joseph Manana’s painting, which depicts
the visit of a traditional healer (Inyanga) to a rural Zulu homestead. For many
rural Zulus getting to medical clinics is both time-consuming and expensive.
Many Zulu people also make use of both traditional and western medical
treatment.
Generous Friends: FOTAG Acquisitions can be seen in the
Tatham’s Schreiner Gallery until August 23. The Tatham Art Gallery is situated opposite the Town
Hall in Chief Albert Luthuli
Street, Pietermaritzburg. It is open from Tuesdays
to Sundays from 10h00 to 17h00. Café Tatham is open on Saturdays. Safe parking
with a car guard available. More information on 033 392 2801 or visit www.tatham.org.za
