Tomorrow (October 19) night’s Mondays @ Six at St Clements
programme will be presented by Barbara Maude-Stone and titled Dear Old Durban.
Barbara Maude-Stone’s splendid collection of postcards was
the catalyst that inspired the book in which Yvonne Miller recalls the sights,
scents and sounds of Durban, ‘a small town on the east coast of South Africa.’
We are taken back to the early 1900’s, a gracious era, when
ladies wore long gloves and elegant gowns whilst attending the
Governor-General’s garden party, or one of the many theatre shows that varied
from vaudeville and Charlie Chaplin to Shakespeare. Transport was by trams that
left from Dead Man’s Tree outside the post office and trundled their way up the
Berea to Toll Gate.
There will be a display of models of the old trolley buses,
to add interest to Barbara Maude-Stone’s talk, with slides of her collection of
postcards of Dear Old Durban.
St Clements is
situated at 191 Musgrave Road. Mondays @ Six run between 18h00 and 19h00. Table
bookings are essential on 031 202 2511. There is no cover charge but there is a
donations box to support presenters.
