(Darren Maule)
Fans of comedy are
in for a treat with a duet of laughs from two of KZN most well-known voices,
Darren Maule and Neville Pillay, when they take to the stage at Hilton College
Theatre for their show LOL on October
23.
Known for coaxing
people out of bed in the mornings, the two radio DJs - who both host breakfast shows
- are equally comfortably sharing jokes over the radio waves as they are
standing up in front of an auditorium full of people.
Maule has been a
familiar name and face on the South African entertainment circuit for over 20
years. He is one of the country’s top stand-up comedians. The East Coast Radio
personality has starred in award-winning television series and he has featured
in numerous TV advertisements, both locally and internationally. Television
viewers will remember the funny-man Darren Maule from the Survivor Santa Carolina Island in early 2010. He is also an
accomplished actor and in the same year, 2010, Darren enjoyed stage success as
one of the leads in the Tim Plewman farce Grin
and Bare It.
Maule will also be
appearing in this year’s adult panto Aladdin
Grey Street which runs at Greyville Racecourse from November 10 to December
30. He will be adopting a somewhat different public persona, that of the Genie
of the Lamp in this year’s grown-up version of Aladdin. Maule is no stranger to
the stage, having trained as a professional actor. He has appeared in a host of
productions in Gauteng. However, this is the first time Durban audiences will
get a chance to see him in character on stage. Written and directed by Darren
King, Aladdin Grey Street promises to
be a bumper offering of good old-fashioned belly laughs and a liberal dose of
saucy naughty gags.
Pillay who hosts
the Morning Rush on Lotus fm, a show
that is unique in that it is the only breakfast show in South Africa that
consistently produces fresh new local content every day in the form of skits
and song parodies. The scam calls are hilarious and the song parodies go viral
regularly. The comedian also has three movies under his belt – Attack of the Indian Wereworld; 31 Million
Reasons and Curry and Vice. Added
to being a renowned radio DJ, he is an avid music lover, film producer, eMcee
and of course, comedian.
“My motto in life is
‘Always be different but never in a stupid way!’ It has always been my dream to
be on radio and to make people laugh, I am one of the luckiest people around as
I get to live that dream being different in a clever way every day,” states a
smiling Pillay.
