COUNTRY GIRLS

(Samantha Landers, Tammy Saville & Mia Whitfield)

All lovers of country music should head for Rhumbelow for this charming production. (Review by Keith Millar)

All lovers of country music should head down to the Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo this weekend to check out the charming production, Country Girls. Featuring three vivacious and talented singers, Samantha Landers, Mia Whitfield and Tammy Saville, the show is light-hearted, full of fun and has plenty of good music.

A smooth-talking, tongue in cheek, voice-over relates the story that links the music together. It tells of three rather naive young lasses who head out into the world in search of love, friendship and happiness. They get married, have children, are betrayed and have their hearts broken. They then find out what life is all about, discover themselves and are emancipated.

It all sounds very much like a country song itself, doesn’t it? However, the main difference is that the cast do not take themselves or the story very seriously. They play it for fun and laughs and that is the charm of the production.

Landers, Whitfield and Saville are all experienced and accomplished singers. Their voices work very pleasantly together and their harmonising is a pleasure. The songs are performed in various combinations of solos, duos and trios. All in all, the girls give a sassy, bubbly and thoroughly enjoyable performance.

Country Girls features many well-known and popular songs as well as many not-so-well-known numbers. Included are Life is a Highway, Walking To Memphis, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, Suspicious Minds, The First Cut Is The Deepest, Stand By Your Man, Love Hurts, End Of The World, Crying, Black Velvet and Teach Your Children Well. Not a bad playlist, I sure you will agree.

A song to look out for is the very funny I’m My Own Grandma.

Although Country Girls features mostly country music it should appeal to a much wider audience. If you are in the mood for a light-hearted, relaxed and pleasantly entertaining night out and believe in supporting local artists, then this show is well worth a visit.
