DAVID GOULDIE’S RETROROBICS

(David Gouldie aka Eugene)

If you hate pounding the pavement, tramping the treadmill, being bullied at boot camp or grunting your way around weight machines - but still want to be fit and fabulous - then Eugene might just have the solution.

Well-known choreographer and director David Gouldie takes on the persona of Eugene who gives a thumbs down to the usual exercise grind and turns back the clock to a time when getting fit was a whole lot more fun.

Think luminous lycra, high energy music, boom boxes, headbands and hot moves.

With a background spanning dance, choreography, fashion shows, events musical theatre, he is putting the fun back into fitness with exercise classes which can be enjoyed with friends and family in Durban’s great outdoors.

“The 80s brought us a revolution in the fitness industry where exercise became more social and not just what you did to build muscles and earn Brownie points,” says Eugene. “I’m calling it Retrorobics, a nod to those retro aerobics classes which got people of all ages off the couch and stepping up and out.”

Season 1 is currently underway on Durban’s South Beach outside Surf Riders every Saturday from 08h00 to 09h00 for six weeks, having starting on November 21. An added bonus is that all participants will get 20% off a hearty breakfast at Surf Riders from 09h00 to 10h00.

For those who prefer evening exercise, Eugene will take over Bulwer Park (behind the KZNSA Gallery) on Mondays from 17h00 to 20h00 in December.

“It’s about getting out, getting your groove on and going for gold,” said Eugene. “Entrance is free, but donations are welcome!”
