LAUREL CANYON

(Jason Andrew, Barry Thomson & Dawn Selby)

Laurel Canyon wasn't much to look at. A few modest bungalows and log cabins crammed between an occasional faded mansion that had been left over from the days when it was a secluded, semi-rural retreat for Hollywood's silent-movie stars. And yet from the quiet of the densely wooded canyon came a music revolution that would change popular culture.

Laurel Canyon is one of rock's most mythic neighbourhoods. This is where Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young first folded their voices into one beautiful harmony; where Zappa welcomed artists including Hendrix and Mick Jagger to parties at his infamous 'Log Cabin' in 1968. Laurel Canyon was the inspiration for the Doors' Love Street, the Mamas and the Papas' 12:30 (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon), CSNY's Our House and an entire album by British blues legend John Mayall. It's where music-business legends David Geffen, Jac Holtzman and Elliot Roberts helped build the recording careers of the singer-songwriters who defined the very essence of the 60s California sound.

Rhumbelow Theatre will present Laurel Canyon subtitled The Reals Minus One in Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

The show features top hits from artists including Joni Mitchell (Big Yellow Taxi), Crosby, Stills and Nash, Mamas and the Papas, The Byrds, The Eagles, Carole King and Bonnie Raitt.

The sub-title The Reals Minus One refers to the fact that the popular band comprising Barry Thomson, Dawn Selby and Jason Andrew will be performing without their fourth member, Mali Sewell.

Performances take place at the Alan Wilson Shellhole in Pietermaritzburg on November 29 at 14h00 and at 18h30.

The production then moves to the Rhumbelow Theatre where it will perform over three weekends as follows:
