PLAYHOUSE COMPANY’S 2016 SCHOOLS PROGRAMME

Booking is open for The Playhouse Company’s 2016 Schools Programme, which will cater for both primary and high schools in KwaZulu-Natal. The programme runs from February 15 to March 18.

“We are very pleased to once again offer schools in KwaZulu-Natal the opportunity to be enriched by live theatre, both at The Playhouse Company and on tour to schools in the province. Theatre has the power to enhance learners’ understanding of their setworks, as well as deliver powerful messages about important matters such as the environment. We look forward to performing to schools from around the province, and, hopefully, planting the seed of a life-long love of theatre in young people’s hearts,” said Linda Bukhosini, Playhouse Company CEO and Artistic Director.

For primary schools, I AM offers the perfect beginning to the year with its message of water conservation and love for and preservation of the Earth. The show will be performed by the Playhouse Dance Residency (PDR) and directed by the PDR’s award-winning Sandile Mkhize. Back by popular demand after children were blown away by the production at the South African Women’s Festival in 2015, I AM explores humankind’s relationship with the environment, and the need for each and every person, no matter how young, to help to save our planet. Its emphasis on water conservation is highly relevant to South Africa in light of the current drought and consequent water restrictions.

From February 8 to 12, I AM will be performed for two shows per day in the Playhouse Drama Theatre at a cost of R30 per learner. Then, from February 15 to March 4, the production will tour to junior and senior primary schools in KZN at a cost of R10 per learner. Bookings can be made through Dawn on 031 369 9407.

For high schools, South African theatre great Ralph Lawson will direct a dramatization of Grade 11 and 12 English second-language Poetry Setworks. Poetry is often a source of confusion and bewilderment for learners, but by dramatizing these works, they will be made simpler for learners in order to facilitate understanding, assist with improved exam marks, and contribute towards the development of these young people.

“To perform a poem is so much more than simply reading the words; it is a matter of communicating that piece to the audience, using the appropriate pace and voice, capturing the mood and tone of the work, and above all, bringing the poem to life,” said Lawson.

Poetry Setworks will be performed for two shows per day in the Playhouse Loft from Monday to Wednesday from February 15 to March 18 at a cost of R30 per learner. On Thursdays and Fridays during the same period, the production will tour to high schools in KZN at a cost of R10 per pupil. Bookings can be made through Dawn on 031 369 9407.
