Siwela Sonke Dance company’s programme for new
choreographers, held last week at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre, shows their
skill, their imagination, their energy and their sensitivity.
Presenting five different works, there is an interesting and
pleasing variety. The use of dramatic elements, voice and dialogue as well as
various innovative props made each piece visually stimulating.
These dancers work together as a unit and often become
enmeshed in the space so as to convey a holistic vision at all times. Their
total dedication is evident and the themes explored were refreshing and
creative. All these new choreographers are to be applauded for the high calibre
of their presentations.
The exciting and appropriate music / sound complemented and
extended the artistic development of each performance, creating mood and
imagery to which the dancers responded with precision and sensitivity.
The productions and their choreographers were Travellers by Siyabonga Mhlongo, Enough by Ntombi Gasa, Ngitakule by Sbusiso Gantsa, Passages by Mxolisi Nkomonde and Clean Heart by Neliswa Rushualang.
This is a well-balance programme which showcases the talent
of this dance theatre company. Durban is indeed privileged to have this
wonderful resident company. - Dawn Haynes
