The Sanlam Portrait Award Top 40 Exhibition is currently
running at the KwaZulu-Natal Society of Arts (KZNSA). The exhibition, which
celebrates and showcases some of the best original portraiture in South Africa,
includes the R100,000 prize-winning portrait, After the Match by artist John Pace and 39 of the top entries to
the Sanlam Portrait Award.
“After the success of the Cape Town and Johannesburg
exhibitions where many of the portraits were sold, we are excited for the
exhibition to be showcased in Durban,” says Stefan Hundt, head of Sanlam
Private Wealth’s Art Advisory Service and curator of the Sanlam Art Collection.
It was KwaZulu-Natal artist Heather Gourlay-Conyngham that
walked off with the top prize in the first Sanlam Portrait Award, held in 2013,
for her nude male portrait entitled A
Young Man (177 x 80cm, oil on canvas).
Following the Durban exhibition the Top 40 portraits, under
the auspices of the Sanlam Art Collection, will tour around the country.
