27 year old Jazz vocalist from
Pietermaritzburg, Thobeka Langa will be performing on May 1 at Seaman’s Corner
in Hammarsdale.
Developing her love for music at a
very young age, she started singing at grassroots level with a community gospel
group called Change, in Pietermaritzburg. After completing her Matric, she enrolled
for her studies in Performing Arts at the Mbongeni Ngema Academy. She further
pursued her music studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal - Howard College
School of Arts where she specialised in Jazz and Popular Music.
In Hammarsdale, Langa will perform
some of her compositions and favourite jazz standards, but she will also
perform some pop songs by her favorite vocalists from way way back. Langa’s
band for this performance will be Ndumiso Ndlovu on keys, Senzo Mdamba on bass
guitar and Stanley Matlou on drums and of course Thobeka Langa on vocals.
Langa has shared the stage with a
number of high profile artists such as Lira, Judith Sephuma, Ronnie Jordan,
MiCasa, and Ernie Smith. She has also directly worked with a number of musicians
like Change Gospel Group, Victory Sonqoba Arts Company, Beat-Route Jazz Band,
Soul Force Jazz Band and Unlocked keys. Langa has over the years also graced
the following events with her music - Durban Vodacom July, MTN Durban Jazz
festival, Ballito Prawn and Jazz Festival, SAIFTA Awards, KZN Department of
Arts and Culture High Tea Party and Pam Golding Awards.
As part of her Bachelor of Practical
Music degree, Langa passed Performance cum laude. This as well as her
performance at the launch of the UNISA School of Music; earned her a
scholarship to study towards her Master’s Degree at the North Carolina Central
University. She was also privileged to be selected as a lead vocalist for a
student band that represented the University Of Kwazulu Natal School Of Arts
Music Exchange Program at the Virginia Common Wealth University Music School
(Virginia, Richmond) in October 2013.

by Concerts SA and the eThekwini Municipality Arts and Living Cultures and
presented by iSupport Music Business. Concerts SA is a joint South
African/Norwegian initiative that aims to stimulate live music in South Africa
by finding and implementing ways to create regular, sustainable performance
platforms. It also aims to develop an interest in and appreciation of live
music by showcasing music performances and conducting workshops at schools. In
addition to their appearance at Seaman’s Corner, Langa and her band will
perform at Sansikane Primary School in Cato Ridge.
Langa will appear on May 1 at Seaman’s
Corner, Unit 3, Hammarsdale, Mpumalanga. Doors open at 18h00 and tickets at R30
available at the door.
