Currently running in the Schreiner Gallery at the Tatham Art
Gallery in Pietermaritzburg is Lorna
Peirson: A Memorial Exhibition.
Peirson obtained a BA in Fine Art from the University of
Natal in 1950. From 1941 to 1950 she taught at schools in South Africa and from
1951 to 1952 at schools in London. On her return to South Africa in 1953 she
taught art at the Umpumulo Training College, Mapumulo, Natal and from 1962 to
1963 at the Vryheid Training College.
From 1963 to 1981 she was the teacher in charge of the
one-year Special Art Teachers’ Course at the Ndaleni Training College near
Richmond, Natal. From 1982 to 1985 she was Senior Lecturer in charge of Art at
the Indumiso College of Education, Edendale in Pietermaritzburg.
On her retirement in 1985 Lorna returned to painting. She
held two solo exhibitions, in 1988 at the Natal Society of Artists Gallery,
Durban, and in 2001 at the Jack Heath Gallery, Pietermaritzburg. Her work is
represented in public and private collections in South Africa and England.
This memorial exhibition consists of art works by Peirson
dating from 1949 until her death last year.
The exhibition closes on September
4 at 17h00. The Tatham Art Gallery is situated opposite the Town Hall in
Chief Albert Luthuli Street, Pietermaritzburg. It is open from Tuesdays to
Sundays from 10h00 to 17h00. Café Tatham is open on Saturdays. Safe parking
