Supper, Sounds and
Stills is a collaboration of creatives taking place on July 29 at The Plant.
Nestled in Durban’s hottest creative hub, The Station Drive
Precinct; The Plant venue provides the backdrop for an elegant Supper Club set.
Renegade Kitchen and the jazzy ladies of Heels over Head have been cooking up
some old classics and smooth beats and paired up with Vulane Mthembu’s Film
Noir inspired photographs; vintage décor and mid century classics by Solder,
they have put together a night to remember.
For this special occasion Heels over Head partnered with
photographer Vulane Mthembu and curators Russel Hlongwane and Simanga Zondo to
present a special series of Film Noir themed photographs.
This exhibition looks at the universal search and struggle
of women for their place within society. In the works you will see women in a
(seemingly) powerful positions and it seeks dialogue about the ideal image of
women that is being presented by the media and the masses. Mthembu presents
these issues by cleverly making use of Film Noir, gangster type, images in
which the women are always victorious.
As part of the exhibition Heels over Head will perform live.
With their sparkling stage presence the ladies of Heels over Head always look
classy and stylish and the charm and charisma of their lead vocalists Thulile
Zama and Nomkhosi Mazibuko is undeniable. They are joined by skilled drummer
Rebekah Doty and accomplished pianist Mandy Cobbing. Smoking hot guitarist
Chillie Wardell-Stent joins the band and the flaming fusion of musicians is
complete.
Their music is referred to as smooth jazz or easy-breezy pop
jazz. They have developed a notable and clever signature sound that consists of
current African-influenced music and uniquely re-arranged standards. The band
is known for making audiences get on their feet and dance to their rhythmic
bass lines and their cheerful melodies. No doubt that fans take joy in
listening to some Heels over Head; the African jazz ambiance, skilled musicians
and vocalists and well-founded rhythm works enchanting.
